William Ulate

Missouri Botanical Garden
Sr. Project Manager, IT Division
Missouri, USA
I'm interested in most if not all the topics in this Conference. Coming from Computer Science, my point of entry was Collections, Digitization and Species Profiles and then moved to GeoSpatial information and landed in Literature, OCR, Citizen Science, Image Extraction and Information Retrieval. Particularly relevant for my current work are the topics of DwC, Data Aggregation, Data Quality and Vocabularies, Text Mining, Image Recognition . My interest in new projects to advance Biodiversity Informatics keeps me around topics like Semantic Search, Ontologies, Annotations, Services and Tools.

About me? Well, I am Costa Rican and currently TDWG's Treasurer. I graduated from Computer Science and Informatics in Costa Rica in 1991 and worked as software developer for 7 years, before turning to Biodiversity Informatics, first as analyst/programmer and then as Coordinator of the Informatics Development Unit of the National Biodiversity Institute in Costa Rica (INBio). Then, since 2007, I worked as Data Node Manager for the Latin America Region of The Nature Conservancy (TNC). In 2011, I moved to Saint Louis, to work at the Center for Biodiversity Informatics in the IT Department of the Missouri Botanical Garden, as Global Coordinator for the Biodiversity Heritage Library for 3 years, then as Technical Director for BHL-US/UK for 2 more years and now as Data Administrator for the World Flora Online project.
